Negotiating starting step

As a City employee, your salary or wage will be determined by your "step".

If you have received a written job offer that specifies a lower starting step than you want, you have the right to negotiate that step with your hiring manager. You will not be able to negotiate this after signing an offer letter.

Any negotiation must be with the hiring manager, not with Human Resources (HR). If you have been told by HR that you are not allowed to negotiate for a higher step, contact MPEA.

Requesting a higher vacation accrual rate

If you have relevant outside experience, you may also request a higher vacation accrual rate. You will not be able to request this after signing an offer letter.

The hiring manager may grant your request at their discretion, and HR must determine the number of years of experience that are relevant for the hiring manager to consider. If you have been told by HR that you are not allowed to request a higher vacation accrual rate, contact MPEA.
